Our approach
Interserve is committed to improving the standards of care in the justice sector. By combining innovation, technology and processes to improve delivery we can bring about cultural change through:
Education and training
Interserve provides a range of meaningful work, education and skills training in conjunction with external partners. We are working with Business in the Community (BITC) and Westminster Business Council to support local businesses in meeting their business needs. Interserve is fully committed to delivering training opportunities for all our employees, from skills for life to apprenticeships, NVQs and on-the-job training to support them in reaching their full potential, examples of which can be found here.
Efficiencies
Interserve is committed to delivering the government's stated objective of driving better for less. We are experienced in using technology and IT solutions, flatter management structures, staffing arrangements and a different but proven approach to estate management, to realise savings and driving value for money over the life cycle of a contract.
Technology
Interserve understands that the application of technology is a key driver in reducing the many routine administrative functions delivered by staff. We are committed to improving processes, reducing waste and ensuring good governance across all our contracts, and often use technology to deliver a more flexible and cost effective approach to labour management.
Transformation
Interserve ensures that delivery, security and stability are at the core of an effective transition. Our extensive experience in transforming contracts in mission-critical environments, including within health, defence and government contracts, enables us to swiftly perform an analysis of staff capability and experience to match the best skills and people to the roles required. Added to this, we have transferred over 20,000 employees through TUPE (circa 80 per cent of our workforce), and understand the importance of building strong trade union relationships and clear communication with transferring staff to ensure minimal disruption and uncertainty as we work towards our goal of improving services for all.
Sustainability
Sustainability is embedded into the way we work, and Interserve aims to deliver a zero carbon justice business within five years. Interserve understands that it is essential to provide a robust financial performance in order to meet the social and environmental aspirations of the Ministry of Justice and the wider society. By becoming more sustainable, we play a part in aligning economic interests with communities' needs, whilst benefiting the environment. We have developed a range of sustainable solutions from behavioural change programmes, to work programmes and local social initiatives. Find out about Interserve's commitment and approach to sustainability in practice.
Innovation
Interserve's design team created a more effective operational regime through the re-design of prison cells to maximise visibility, minimise opportunities for self-harm and reduce search times resulting in lower operating cost. It is this understanding of the built environment that has enabled Interserve to develop operational solutions in close collaboration with NOMS to improve cost, safety and security. Examples of other innovations include Interserve's design of the 'High Street' concept, which brought together all regime components in a physically logical way, resulting in considerable improvements in both efficiency and effectiveness. We were also responsible for the introduction of 'colour coding' identification of routes and facilities, which have become adopted models of best practice in the prisons sector.
Recognised delivery
Interserve has won the Considerate Constructors Scheme National Award Winners in 2011 (Silver Award for HMP/YOI Isis) 2010 (Bronze Award for HMP/YOI Isis) and in 2008 (Bronze Award for HMP Garth).
Improving services
Reduced court escort costs by up to 40-50 per cent at HMP Foston Hall, through reducing prisoner processing time freeing up Prison Officers to carry out other duties within the prison.
Reducing re-offending
Our operational custody approach is designed around, safety, decency and quality of life. We are committed to working with the third sector to improve re-offending rates and creating sustainable employment. Find out more.
